Garages usually offer a lot more access to bugs than our homes. From the large garage door opening to plenty of ventilation sources, lack of light, and lots of out of sight corners it’s a natural place for bugs to get out of the heat or cold. So how do you usually keep your garage pest free? Here are a few tips to help!
1. Invest in Proper Storage
Bugs love places to hide. When your garage is just a tangled mess of loose things, you’ve set up the perfect environment for them to move in and set up a home. If you don’t invest in the correct storage methods, you’re practically inviting bugs to come in. Take the time to seriously look at the state of your garage and we recommend setting up some basic shelves to organize your toys, tools and gear. Once the space has been established, store your things in plastic bins. These are cheap ways to organize and protect your stuff. Lastly. don’t push everything right up against the wall. Leave some space between the walls and the shelving so that you have clear visibility around your area to inspect for bugs or rodents.
2. Deny Food Sources
This kind of goes hand in hand with #1, but you may keep things like dog and cat food, or even some oils, powders and other liquid solutions can attract bugs. Make sure you are getting bins and other closable storage solutions for things like pet food.
3. Make Repairs
If you’ve had roof damage, or cracks in your stucco, or wood rot in siding or any number of things that can go wrong as normal wear and tear on a home, take the time to make repairs. These are open invitations for bugs and other pests to make their way into your garage space, and ultimately your home. Take the time to seal cracks and repair damage around your property.
4. Use Baits and Traps
Some basic store bought traps can catch the odd scorpion or roach making its way around your garage. Unless it’s a complete infestation, this can go a long way to keep them from making their way into your home. If there is a much larger infestation than a wayward bug, then we recommend professional help, but this can be a cheap and easy precaution to keep your garage pest free.
